About VAnet
From VAnetWiki
VAnet is yet another darknet: an IP based network, comparable to the internet, but with different rules. On VAnet, it's possible to do anything you can do on the internet, without the limitations imposed by today's internet providers and governments. In particular, there will be more freedom, no censoring and your privacy will be respected.
Because we are not in the position to roll out a global physical infrastructure, the VAnet network is built on top of the existing internet, using VPN tunnels.

Other darknets
There are quite a few other darknets these days, each of them having different goals. Our goal is freedom and privacy, but we also want to guarantee a smooth operation of the network. Therefore, VAnet has a high degree of centralisation (in contrast to most other darknets). We feel that the centralisation is necessary to guarantee a stable and fast network, and ironically, to maintain freedom.
What's inside?
Technically, anything that's possible on the internet, is possible on VAnet. Currently, there are a few IRC servers, an occasional live TV stream and an e-mail gateway, but more services will be deployed soon.
Due to our inter-darknet links to Anonet and hopefully soon also dn42, it's possible to access most of their services too, including outbound proxies, a torrent tracker and some more interesting stuff...
Technical challenge
While participating in a darknet like VAnet, you may walk into a lot of technical challenges. Configuring all kinds of software, your network environment, helping other people, get in touch with other skilled people. You'll generally learn a lot, and many of the technologies in use, are also in use on the internet and in big company networks.
On VAnet you can freely experiment with linux networking, BGP, VPN software, webservers, e-mail servers, DNS, firewall software, in a large internet-like network.
Future
In future we plan to use our own dedicated software that will take care of VPN, routing, DNS system.
While there is nothing wrong with tinc, quagga and bind, this setup is chalenging for avarage
user to set up and running. We want VAnet to be available for many users, not only technicaly
skilled people. Work on BVPN is in progress.
So, how to get started?
If you think you'll enjoy VAnet, check out the Getting started page.
If VAnet does not match your expectations, you may want to check out Anonet2 and dn42 instead.
